«Лошадиные торги». Раньше в Англии часто устраивались деревенские ярмарки, где торговали лошадьми. Продавцы запрашивали высокие цены, а покупатели усиленно торговались, и для совершения сделки обе стороны шли на компромиссы. Связь этого выражения с лошадьми уже давно исчезла, и сейчас выражение horse-trading применяется к любым деловым переговорам, когда каждая из сторон неохотно идет на уступки при подписании договора.

When we meet the trade delegation there will be some serious horse-trading. They have the resources; we have the know-how. — Нам придётся серьёзно поторговаться на встрече с торговой делегацией: у них есть ресурсы, а у нас ноу-хау/технологии.
